While it's still too soon to say if Gov. Baldacci's jail consolidation plan will work, it is clearly moving in the right direction.

In a meeting with lawmakers this week, Corrections Commissioner Martin Magnusson said that the state could close as many as six old- fashioned county jails and still meet the state's needs under a single unified corrections system.
