Ikran Mohamud screeched and howled the first time she sat in a kayak and prepared to paddle into the vast expanse of Casco Bay.

Born in Somalia and raised in a refugee camp in Kenya, Mohamud wasn't ready for the challenge of navigating the cold Atlantic on her own, though it paled in comparison to the dangers she and her family escaped when they came to the United States five years ago.

"I wasn't really sure what I was doing. I was afraid," Mohamud said of her first crack at kayaking. "Then I calmed down and I did it, and I realized that the impossible becomes possible. It was really beautiful."
