Carol was born Dec. 19, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the daughter of Charles and Azalea Sproul. Carol attended Bucknell University where she met her husband Robert Charles Whitehead Jr. After they were married in 1943, she completed the Bachelor of Arts in English at Rutgers University. Later she obtained her teaching certification from Beaver College.
