Card, Bush's Chief of Staff, to Address Gop Gathering ; the Convention Begins Friday in Augusta.

Summary

Andrew Card Jr., President Bush's chief of staff, will be the keynote speaker Friday when the Maine Republican Party kicks off its two-day convention at the Augusta Civic Center. The party holds a convention every two years, so this will mark the first such gathering since 2002.

The convention, which may attract as many as 1,600 registered delegates, also will hear from the GOP's two congressional candidates, who hope to unseat incumbent Democratic Reps. Tom Allen and Michael Michaud in the general election Nov. 2. Both Republican congressional hopefuls are unopposed for their party nominations.
