Cap Backers Take Early Lead in Money Race ; Activists Predict Each Side Will Raise and Spend $1 Million or More Before the Nov. 2 Vote.

Summary

A prominent Maine businessman has given $25,000 to the referendum campaign that is pushing a 1 percent cap on property taxes, prompting a leader of that drive to predict that more large business contributions may be in the offing as the campaign progresses. David DeLorme of Freeport, the owner of the DeLorme Publishing Co. in Yarmouth, gave the money to Tax Cap Yes!, a political action committee, on May 28, according to a campaign-finance report submitted to the state Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices.

So far, several pro-cap PACs have raised a combined total of more than $387,000, while opponents say they have yet to begin raising money. Activists on both sides of the issue have predicted that each side will raise and spend $1 million or more before voters decide the issue Nov. 2.
