The Brunswick Town Council may have surprised a fair number of people by doing the right thing Monday night.

That is, it voted to allow a poem that contained references to God - not Zeus or Odin, but "God" - to be placed on a memorial to firefighters to be erected at a new station at Cook's Corner.

True, this isn't exactly a novelty. The same poem, written in 1959 and expressed as a plea to preserve firefighters and their families, appears on the National Firefighters' Memorial and many others around the country.
