Former President George H.W. Bush helped launch a fundraising campaign Wednesday for a planned $23.5 million expansion at Southern Maine Medical Center. The 41st president, who recently became honorary chairman of the capital campaign for a proposed new emergency wing at the hospital, spoke at a ceremony held under a tent outside SMMC marking the start of the campaign. Many of his remarks were lighthearted reminiscences about his mother, the late Dorothy Walker Bush, for whom the emergency wing will be named.

Dorothy Walker Bush, a former patient at SMMC and benefactor of the hospital, was the parent the ex-president said he most relied on for advice and moral guidance.
