President Bush proposed a $2.77 trillion budget Monday that includes money to build a new generation of Navy ships at Bath Iron Works but would trim spending on social programs for Maine's elderly and disabled. The budget, calling for 2.3 percent growth in spending, covers the 2007 fiscal year starting Oct. 1. Overall, military spending would increase significantly while many domestic programs would see little or no gains. Congress will debate the proposals for the rest of the year.

The president's budget includes $2.6 billion to begin construction on two of the next generation of Navy destroyers, called DD(X), one of which is to be built by BIW. It would also spend $957 million for two Littoral Combat Ships for shallow-water combat, which BIW workers would help design and build.
