The expensive mess that was the Deepwater modernization program for the U.S. Coast Guard may have opened a door of opportunity for Bath Iron Works.

As reported last week, BIW has indicated it wants to make a bid to build up to 58 fast-response cutters for the Coast Guard. If its proposal is selected, it would be the first time BIW has built vessels for anyone other than the U.S. Navy.
