Pat Clements misses seeing the bees. And she's not alone. "They're fascinating to watch," she said. "The whole philosophy of the bee and what they're doing and how disciplined they are."

She and her husband, Manen, are part of a new wave of hobbyists who are learning the ins and outs of the ancient art of beekeeping, from hives and honey to parasites and pollination. The Yarmouth couple are among more than two dozen people taking a beekeeping course offered by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension in cooperation with Pineland Farms.
