After nine months of debate and review, the City Council finally approved plans Wednesday for a waterfront condominium project that will leave the city with three tall buildings on the banks of the Kennebec River. Only one person spoke against New Bathport at the meeting, a sign that the community had come to terms with a project that had in its early stages caused significant controversy.

Last month, the Planning Board approved the site plan for the 24- unit development, leaving the City Council with a final decision to make: Should the city allow the buildings to exceed the zone's 35- foot height limit in return for having the developers pay for downtown improvements?
