Gov. John Baldacci and Equality Maine, a leading advocacy group for gays and lesbians, have come out against a bill in the Legislature that would legalize same-sex marriage. That increases the likelihood that the bill, which already appeared headed for defeat, is all but certain to be rejected. The opposition is not especially surprising because the bill is sponsored by Republican Rep. Brian Duprey, R-Hampden, a conservative lawmaker who strongly opposes same-sex marriage. Duprey plans to fight his own bill, which he says he is sponsoring solely at the request of an unidentified constituent who believes the state should allow gays and lesbians to marry.

The fact that Baldacci and Equality Maine plan to fight the bill means supporters of gay rights will not turn Duprey's bill against him and use it to push for the immediate legalization of same-sex marriage.
