Jackie Rice showed up to every practice. She picked up scattered equipment or collected stray softballs and watched as her teammates prepared for the season and each game. Yet workout-wise, there wasn't much else Rice was able to do with the South Portland softball team.

However, her return to the field earlier this week gave the Red Riots a late-season boost. Rice played her first game of the season Monday in a 3-2 win over Bonny Eagle, then played Tuesday in a 2-0 victory against Deering.
