Anglers who took advantage of the first day of open-water fishing on Thursday discovered again why it falls on April Fools' Day. Those who endured damp conditions and a lack of open water said they didn't expect to catch any fish from the shores and docks where they cast. And yet, try as they might, fishermen had a hard time avoiding crowds.

"It will warm up, and the fish will start biting, but the idiots go out early," said Orland Morton of Gorham, who came to fish the Muddy River at the north end of Sebago Lake with his spinning rod and bait bucket. "Songo Lock always has some crowd there. So I don't bother to fish it."
