Arthur E. Tainter Sr., a former county commissioner who represented the Bath area and served as Sagadahoc County sheriff for 11 years, died Wednesday. He was 81.

Mr. Tainter was elected sheriff in 1977 and served six consecutive terms. Sheriff Mark Westrum remembered him Friday as a caring and compassionate person who reached out to kids and always tried to make the community a better place. Tainter retired in 1988.
