When I arrived in Portland nearly 16 years ago, smack dab in the middle of a crisis in the banking industry, there was an angst here that I didn't understand.

I had most recently been a senior editor at a large business journal covering the corporate community in Connecticut and New York. I had written about the banking industry for several years before joining the staff here as a business reporter, so I was well- qualified - I thought - to write about the changes that were taking place in that industry here.
